Baguio City, otherwise known as the summer capital of the Philippines, is a unique tourist destination. Perched on the mountains of the Cordillera range, this city is a blend of Philippine folk and modern design. Its location gives it an almost temperate climate rarely found in this purely tropical country.
Situated about 1500 meters above sea level, one can imagine being in the clouds yet grounded in a purely urban setting. A city established by Americans in 1909, it was designed as an R&R destination for servicemen. It takes little effort for one to realize that this city is a must-go destination in one of Philippine vacation packages.
The city is one of the most visited sites in the country and is popular for both local and foreign tourists. It’s relatively small area boasts of 4 universities and a number of colleges and educational centers. It is really an education hub since Baguio City has only 49 square kilometer area.
The first attraction that would greet tourists is the Burnham Park. Originally conceived to be a retreat from the hectic city life of Manila, this park turned into a traditional magnet for tourists. Traditional festivities are usually performed in this park. It is a perfect gathering place for hikers, skaters, bikers and ordinary strollers. This manmade lagoon was named after its creator Daniel Burnham.
If one is interested on the economic side of the community, Mines View Park can give a clue. The site boasts of the breathtaking view of the abandoned entrances and exits of mines that littered the gold-rich hills of this city. Today Mines View Park has also transformed itself into a bazaar where tourists can shop for any souvenir items the locale can offer. The produce of the province found their way here. One cannot miss all kinds of jams and woodcraft that are a feast for the eyes.
Camp John Hay is also the name of the famous R&R facility of American military since WWII until they were expelled of the country in the early 90s. This resort has now become a world class tourist destination due to its extravagant hotel type rooms, an 18-hole golf course, heated swimming pool, and a six-lane bowling court.
Folk religiosity is demonstrated by the famous Baguio Cathedral. This landmark is a beacon that brings faithful and non-faithful alike to visit its unique architecture. This is just one of the main features of many religious centers that find solace in this locality.
The city also hosts the country’s only military school, the Philippine Military Academy. This institution molds future military leaders of the country in the arts of war.
These and other countless interesting sites in Baguio are all cramped within a relatively small area. This means easier travel, affordable accommodation and a healthy invitation for a walk to visit each site. Baguio City never fails to amaze even the most travel-experienced tourist.
This wonderful city is accessible by both land and air. Buses run regular trips on the three main roads to Baguio from Manila — Kennon Road, Marcos Highway, and Naguilian Highway.
